The Astrophotography section of this site is still a work in progress, but in the meantime, please enjoy this image of the Andromeda Galaxy (M31). Located about 2.5 million light-years from Earth, M31 is the closest spiral galaxy to our own Milky Way and is on a slow collision course with it—set to merge in about 4 billion years. It’s one of the brightest deep-sky objects visible from Earth and a favorite target for amateur astrophotographers.

How to read it
Each column is one hour of the forecast; darker blue is better. Top to bottom:
- Cloud cover — dark blue is clear, white is overcast.
- Transparency — haze and water vapor in the air; matters most for faint galaxies and nebulae.
- Seeing — how steady the atmosphere is; good seeing means sharp planetary and lunar detail at high magnification.
- Darkness — sky brightness from sun and moon; the dark band is your real observing window.
- Smoke, wind, humidity, temperature — comfort and gear conditions (dew, shake, transparency-killing haze).
